The Toyota 4Runner, released in Japan in March 1984, is a compact SUV produced by the Japanese automotive manufacturer Toyota. The 4Runner nameplate is Toyota’s longest running series, with the first generation being released in 1984. The 4Runner was introduced as a two-door vehicle, however, later generations were four-door vehicles. The name 4runner is often associated with the Toyota pickup trucks in Japan, referred to as the Hilux Surf; this pickup and the 4Runner are versions of the same vehicle.

Toyota released the 4Runner 1984 in the US in June of that same year. It was available with a removable fiberglass roof panel and rear window. The available engines were a 2.4-liter SOHC four-cylinder engine and a 2.4-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine. Both had an available four-speed automatic transmission and a five-speed manual transmission.

The 1984 4Runner featured a shorter wheelbase than the first generation, with a total length of 170.6 inches, a width of 68.5 inches, a height of 66.3 inches, and a curb weight of 3,300 lbs. It was designed to be a dependable all-around performer, and a comfortable vehicle on both paved roads and off-road terrain.

The 4Runner incorporated other useful features including a two-speed transfer case, part-time four-wheel drive system, a removable rear hatch, and a rear step bumper to assist in loading and unloading the vehicle. The 4Runner also featured adjustable hinges for the rear hatch, which allowed it to be opened at an angle to make loading large items easier.

Aside from the improved mechanics and features inside, the 1984 4Runner has seen a great deal of success and recognition as an off-road performer. In 1984, the 4Runner won the Paris to Dakar Rally, and in 1989 and 1990, the 4Runner won the prestigious Baja 1000 rally.

In conclusion, the Toyota 4Runner 1984 is a reliable and versatile SUV that is capable of performing on both urban and off-road terrains. This is a testament to the Toyota's engineers, who designed a vehicle that is both dependable and efficient. The 4Runner 1984 will remain a classic SUV icon in the Toyota family for years to come.
